The first solo project by the stupendous New York-based Iranian diva is based on poems by Rumi, Saadi and other Persian Sufi masters, set to a mixture of traditional Persian music and delicate electronics, with her extraordinary vocals as the central focus. The result is an inspired, exciting and deeply spiritual masterpiece. Featured musicians include Iranian classical musician Reza Derakhshani, percussionist Glen Velez (a long-time collaborator of Steve Reich), veteran jazz bassist Reggie Workman (who has been heard alongside the likes of John Coltrane), percussionist Will Calhoun (Living Colour/BB King) and others. Since she moved from Tehran to New York Sussan Deyhim has collaborated with Peter Gabriel (on “Passion”), with Bill Laswell, Jah Wobble, Bobby McFerrin, Adrian Sherwood, cyber-guru Jaron Lanier, Majoun (the band she formed with Richard Horowitz, Doug Wimbish & Will Calhoun). “Turbulent’, the video installation on which she collaborated with Iranian artist Shirin Neshat, has won an award at the latest Venice Biennial.
